• The Mohs scale of mineral hardness is the official standard of measurement
• The Mohs scale runs from 1 to 10, with relatively soft talc on the low end of the scale and diamond at the hardest.
• However, it is difficult to try to communicate this complex measure to the consumer on the side of a retail pack
• So, the Screen Protection Industry has adopted a simpler version of Hardness instead – 7H, 9H etc
• Currently 9H is the highest level of hardness you’ll find on a screen protector and those who boast 10H can be dubious
• The testing process involves numerous sharp pointed tools each with tips of increasing scratching power. Starting from 6B, the testing process drags the pencils against the surface.
• The Mohs hardness rating for a material is the level of ‘hard tool’ that manages to scratch it. For tempered glass screen protectors,
this is 9H.
• The Mohs scale above is only really measuring how resistant a screen protector is to scratches when really, what a consumer
wants to know is how well it will survive a drop? And that is measured in MIL-SPEC Drop Protection, shown in millimetres!

As we all know the consumer prefers Glass, BUT the environment needs
recycled materials.
Cutting 7H hard as glass, 100% recycled, bullet-proof materials posed a
new challenge especially as at 0.37mm, Ballistic Glass is thicker than
tempered glass (0.3mm) and THREE times (3x) as thick as TPU (0.12mm)
What was needed?
Think carpet knife versus a surgeon’s scalpel. A much greater force is needed along with a much harder blade to cut accurately and smoothly. Any of the calibrations below can affect the finished product:
- Speed of the blade inside the mount
- Hardness & resilience – of the tip for a smooth finish and 100 cuts
- Thickness – of film is a fine balance, easily wearing away the blade
- Material stack – the right layers of materials, effect the blade and c
- Depth – different heights are even needed for both Clear and Privacy
